Isaiah 28:11

“For with stammering lips and another tongue
He will speak to this people…”

This was the Prophetical word given in the Old Testament by our Lord God to Prophet Isaiah for the coming manifestation of the Holy Spirit.

In Mark 16:17 Lord JESUS CHRIST prophesied as:-

“And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues…”

My friends we can see a part of this prophecy getting fulfilled on the day of Pentecost in Acts 2 as we can see from the following verses

Acts 2:1-12

When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them.  And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

And there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men, from every nation under heaven.  And when this sound occurred, the multitude came together, and were confused, because everyone heard them speak in his own language.  Then they were all amazed and marveled, saying to one another, “Look, are not all these who speak Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each in our own language in which we were born?  Parthians and Medes and Elamites, those dwelling in Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya adjoining Cyrene, visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs—we hear them speaking in our own tongues the wonderful works of God.” So they were all amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “Whatever could this mean?”

The Holy Spirit came upon the 120 gathered in the upper room who waited patiently for the promise of God to be fulfilled as prophesied earlier.

My dear friends why did the Lord prophesied and mentioned about praying in new Tongues (language)?

We must understand the basic features associated with this gift. Although it is a vast subject, we will highlight the main points in this teaching for us to have at least basic knowledge of this wonderful experience and gift given by God.

Acts 2:4

“… And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance…”

The first point is that all those who were gathered in one accord in one place were filled with the Holy Spirit (the Spirit of the Most High God) and as a result all spoke with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

We learn two vital aspects here, first we cannot speak in other tongues on our own in the beginning. It is the Holy Spirit filling us and as a result the utterance being given accordingly. Secondly it is for everyone. You just have to receive it by faith in the promises of Lord JESUS CHRIST. Apostles knew the promise made about the pouring out of the Holy Spirit by our Lord on numerous occasions, as seen in John 14:16,17 and John 7:37,38, Acts 1:8. They waited at the feet of the Lord and finally saw the manifestation of the Holy Spirit. So my friends if you haven’t received the Holy Spirit yet or haven’t experienced the gift of speaking in tongues, then this teaching is for you. Kindly cheer up. God will surely fill you with HIS HOLY SPIRIT. It is not because of our prayers but by the intercession of our  Lord JESUS CHRIST at the right hand of the Father (Romans 8:34) that you are eligible to receive the Holy Spirit.

Secondly this is the sign for a believer as per Mark 16:17. First sign mentioned is expelling the demons out, followed by speaking in new tongues. Believers must have this basic characteristic mentioned as per Mark 16:17,18. There is a visible difference between a born-again believer and a person who belongs to the world.

1 Corinthians 14:2

“… For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries…”

HE who speaks in a tongue speaks not to man but God. Yes this a direct communication with God Almighty. Then the above verse also adds that we speak in mysteries. Yes praying in the supernatural language give us the grace to speak to God and express our Spirit without anyone’s knowledge. No one can understand unless God gives the grace of interpretation.

The above verse also uses the word-“...in the Spirit…” means when we pray in tongues is praying in spirit. When the bible talks about praying in the Spirit as in Ephesians 6:18, praying in tongues is a vital component of praying in the spirit. Some people use it inter changeably, but it covers a wider aspect.

Fourthly 1 Corinthians 14:4

He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church.

If we want rapid personal spiritual growth, we must pray in tongues as much as possible. In Greek translation edification term here is also used to edify our body i.e. bodily healing also takes place by praying in heavenly language. My friend there are men and women around the world who have really prayed in tongues and seen the manifest presence of the Lord.

1 Corinthians 14:18

“…I thank my God I speak with tongues more than you all…”

St Paul had this secret of praying most of the time in tongues, in fact more than anyone else. He had the revelation of power of praying in tongues. People might say that nothing changes if we pray for hours, then it’s of no use, because Lord JESUS CHRIST paid the price on the Cross. But i suppose St Paul must be saving this revelation that Lord JESUS CHRIST paid the price but still he prayed the most of the time in tongues.

My friends if we haven’t received this wonderful gift, ask the Holy Spirit to fill you. Wait on the Lord and ask for HIS grace. It is a free gift of God. Just receive it by faith. Your prayer life will change for good, from glory to glory.

to be continued God willing…
