Praying in Tongues is a powerful spiritual weapon. When we talk about new tongues, we must know that praying in tongues (our prayer language) is different from gift of tongues. Praying in tongues is the result of in-filling of the Holy Spirit. It is the purest form of language or highest form of speech given to us to speak to our Heavenly Father. We do utter mysteries while sometimes we are praising God, on some occasions we are interceding for some person without our knowledge. But 1 Corinthians 12:4-11, we read about the nine gifts of The Holy Spirit, which includes the gift of tongues. This gift of tongues is for others to be saved, encouraged, receive prophetical utterances in their language or for some special time and purpose. On the other hand our prayer language, also known as praying in the Spirit or praying in tongues is a mode of communication between us and God. It’s not necessary that we know what we are speaking, even though we must yearn to interpret the unknown language. It really generates power in our Spirit and refreshes us in many ways.

Bible speaks about different languages i.e. 1 Corinthians 13:1 talks about language of men and the language of Angels.

“Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels…”

Then Bible says that blood of Lord JESUS CHRIST also has a language.

Hebrews 12:24

“…to Jesus the Mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling that speaks better things than that of Abel…”

Then the bible talks about the witness of three in heaven and three on earth

1 John 5:7,8

For there are three that bear witness in heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit; and these three are one.And there are three that bear witness on earth: the Spirit, the water, and the blood; and these three agree as one.

John 16:13

However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.

Holy Spirit shows us the future and guides us into all the truth. It is the Holy Spirit who gives us the free gift of salvation, baptism of Holy Spirit (prayer language/new tongues) and also the gift of tongues.

What happens when we pray in tongues?

  1. 1 Corinthians 14:14

For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful.

It means when we pray in tongues it is our Spirit that is praying. Whenever you are told to pray in Spirit, praying in tongues is what we have to do.

2. Acts 2:11

“…we hear them speaking in our own tongues the wonderful works of God.”

You proclaim the wonderful works of God and thus you glorify God. Whenever you don’t know how to pray, start praying in tongues.

3. Acts 2:7,8

Then they were all amazed and marveled, saying to one another, “Look, are not all these who speak Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each in our own language in which we were born?

When the gift of tongues descend there can be a message for others who are around you. It is without your personal knowledge. You may not be having that particular language known to you but when the anointing of the precious Holy Spirit comes on you, you become a different personality and you may start speaking without your control over your tongue. You are very well aware of what is happening to you but it is the total control of The Holy Spirit. The message can be to edify or encourage others or to save others and sometimes even to warn others.

4. 1 Corinthians 14:27

If anyone speaks in a tongue, let there be two or at the most three, each in turn, and let one interpret.

1 Corinthians 14:5

I wish you all spoke with tongues, but even more that you prophesied; for he who prophesies is greater than he who speaks with tongues, unless indeed he interprets, that the church may receive edification.

We must pray for the gift of interpretation for the church and other people’s edification. Gift of tongues+Interpretation = Gift of Prophecy. So my friends if we want to benefit the church we must pray and ask God for the gift of interpretation.

5. 1 Corinthians 14:17

Otherwise, if you bless with the spirit, how will he who occupies the place of the uninformed say “Amen” at your giving of thanks, since he does not understand what you say? For you indeed give thanks well, but the other is not edified.

If we are not interpreting then when we are praying in tongues it may be that we are thanking God and blessing HIM with our Spirit. It is an act of thanksgiving.

My friends there are so many benefits of praying in tongues, that we cannot cover everything in this teaching. A prophet of God has been taught more than 70 benefits of praying in Tongues. It is an act of sanctification for our soul. But the question is how to receive this blessed gift?

  1. Matthew 7:7-11

“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. Or what man is there among you who, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent?  If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!

Simply ask with faith to your Heavenly Father and HE will give freely. Lord JESUS CHRIST died for us on the Cross and rose again from the dead. HE told us in John 14:16,17 that HE will pray for us to be given the Holy Spirit. HE is still interceding for us on the right hand side of our Father. Therefore cheer up my friend. You are eligible because of HIM, just ask and receive in JESUS CHRIST name.

2-Acts 1:14

These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers.

Acts 2:1

When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.

Acts 2:4

And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Second way is by praying and waiting at the feet of our Lord JESUS CHRIST for HIS promise to be fulfilled. The disciples waited on God and also prayed because they remembered the promise of Lord JESUS CHRIST for the Holy Spirit to come upon them as per Acts 1:8. There is a difference between praying and waiting on the Lord. Waiting means to simply sit in silence with God taking over your soul. Also we must remember the above verse 4 where it says…as the Spirit gave them utterance. Yes it is only the Holy Spirit who is the true source of the free gift from God. Our prayer today is that God will bestow on you this precious Heavenly language for you to pray effectively.

Prophetical word

Acts 19:5,6

When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. And when Paul had laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke with tongues and prophesied.

I believe and perceive in Spirit that very soon the move of the Holy Spirit will operate in such a manner as mentioned in the above verse that the new people coming in the Lord will be filled instantly with the Holy Spirit to such an extent that in one day they will start speaking in tongue and prophesying too. Get ready my friends, we are living in the most glorious times like no other.
